Spain has three main IVA (Impuesto sobre el Valor Añadido) rates. The standard 21% rate applies to most goods and services. A 10% reduced rate covers food for home consumption, hotel accommodation, and passenger transport. A 4% super-reduced rate applies to basic staple foods (bread, milk, eggs), books, and newspapers.
Spain IVA Rates — 2026
Spain's IVA has three rates: 21% standard, 10% reduced (most food, hotels, transport), and 4% super-reduced (staple foods, books, medications). The Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla have different indirect tax regimes that are not standard IVA.
Spain VAT rates in 2026
The headline standard rate is 21%. Reduced rates include 10 on qualifying categories listed in national law. Zero-rated supplies are taxed at 0% with credit on inputs; exempt supplies do not allow input credit recovery.
Use the rate table on this page before applying 21% to every line on an invoice. Software, digital services, and imports can have separate rules announced in budget updates.
Adding and removing VAT in Spain
Forward: multiply the net price by 21% and add to the net. Example on €100.00 net → €21.00 VAT, gross €121.00. Reverse: divide the gross by 1.21 to recover the net amount.
Do not subtract 21% from a tax-inclusive total — division by 1.21 (adjusted for your rate) is the correct extractor. The calculator above performs both directions instantly.
B2B, imports, and e-commerce
B2B sales may qualify for reverse charge where the buyer accounts for VAT on their return. Imports often incur import VAT at clearance unless deferred accounting is elected. Online sellers to consumers may need local registration when exceeding distance-selling thresholds.
Marketplaces in some jurisdictions are deemed suppliers for VAT purposes. Keep customer VAT numbers validated (e.g., VIES in the EU) before zero-rating intra-community supplies.
Using this Spain VAT calculator
Enter a net or gross amount, choose add or remove mode, and confirm the rate matches your supply category. For mixed-rate invoices, calculate each line separately or use our invoice calculator.

Compliance checklist for Spain
Issue valid tax invoices with your registration number, net, VAT rate, and VAT amount. File returns by the statutory deadline; late payment accrues interest. Reconcile ERP VAT control accounts to return boxes each period.
Retain records for the statutory period (often six to ten years). Before audits, test reverse calculations on sample receipts using this tool and archive rate bulletins when percentages change.
Classifying supplies for Spain VAT
Every product and service maps to a VAT category — standard, reduced, zero, or exempt. Misclassification is the most common audit finding: charging 21% when a reduced rate applies overcharges customers; using reduced rates on standard-rated items understates liability. Consult the official commodity code list or adviser before go-live on a new catalog.
Mixed supplies (e.g., meal deals with alcohol) may need apportionment. Bundled digital and physical goods follow specific rules. Update ecommerce tax categories when Spain publishes rate changes.
Invoices, credit notes, and record keeping
Tax invoices must show supplier and customer tax IDs where required, description, quantity, net, rate, tax, and gross. Credit notes reverse prior invoices with sequential numbering. Simplified invoices are allowed only under turnover thresholds defined locally.
Store PDFs and audit trails linking each transaction to the rate used. MTD and e-invoicing mandates in several countries require digital links — manual spreadsheets alone may not suffice for filing.
Worked VAT examples at 21%
Net €250.00 + 21% VAT = €52.50 tax, total €302.50. Gross €302.50 ÷ 1.21 = €250.00 net.
Run the same math on your largest SKU prices monthly to detect ERP rounding drift. For multi-currency sales, convert at the tax point exchange rate published by the central bank or tax authority.
Cross-border sales involving Spain
Exports of goods outside the customs territory are often zero-rated with proof of export. Services B2B may shift tax liability to the customer via reverse charge. B2C digital services to foreign consumers trigger OSS or local registration rules in the consumer's country.
Brexit, EU OSS, and UK VAT reforms changed many historical workflows — confirm whether you sell from, to, or through Spain as a hub. This calculator handles arithmetic only.
Common VAT mistakes in Spain
Subtracting 21% from a gross price instead of dividing by 1.21. Applying the standard rate to food, books, or medical items that qualify for reduced or zero rates. Failing to issue invoices within the required time after supply.
Claiming input credit on entertainment or blocked categories. Use the common mistakes box on this page and official https://www.agenciatributaria.es publications before filing.
