How to calculate GST/HST in Canada
Select your province, enter the amount, and choose add or remove mode.
- Pick the province or territory for place of supply.
- Enter net (before tax) or gross (tax-inclusive) amount.
- Use Add Tax for quotes; Remove Tax to back out tax from a receipt.
Tax = net × (combined rate ÷ 100)
Gross = net + tax
Net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Ontario HST 13%: $100 net → $13 tax → $113 total.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using Ontario HST for a BC customer
Place-of-supply rules determine which provincial rate applies on invoices and e-commerce.
Forgetting QST is filed in Quebec
Quebec QST is administered by Revenu Québec, not CRA, even though GST still applies.
Taxing exempt groceries at full HST
Basic groceries are often zero-rated for GST/HST even when other items are taxable.
Removing tax by subtracting the percentage
Divide the gross total by 1 + (rate ÷ 100). Example: $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 net in Ontario.
